DVI Cables - Fundamentals - Tutorial

Definition:
DVI, the Digital Video Interface standard is a new form of video interface technology made to maximize the quality of flat panel LCD monitors and high-end video graphics cards. DVI is becoming increasingly popular with video card manufacturers, and most cards purchased include both VGA and DVI output ports. In addition to being a ncomputer interface, DVI is also used as the digital transfer method of choice for HDTV, EDTV, Plasma Display, and other ultra-high-end video displays for TV, movies, and DVDs.

DVI Variations:

    1. DVI-D (Digital) format is used for direct digital connections between source video (namely, video cards) and digital LCD monitors. This provides a faster, higher-quality image than with analog, due to the nature of the digital format DVI-D eliminates the analog conversion process and improves the connection between source and display.

    2. DVI-A (Analog) format is used to carry a DVI signal to an analog display, such as a CRT monitor or an HDTV. Although some signal quality is lost from the digital to analog conversion, it still transmits a higher quality picture than standard VGA.

    3. DVI-I format is an integrated system capable of  transmitting either a digital-to-digital signal or an  analog-to-analog signal, but it will not work transmitting a digital-to-analog or analog-to-digital signal.

Single and Dual Links
The Digital formats are available in DVI-D Single-Link and Dual-Link as well as DVI-I Single-Link and Dual-Link format connectors. The dual links provide an increase of speed and signal quality;

Choosing The right DVI Cable:
Determining which type of cable to use for your DVI products is critical in getting the right product the first time. Check both of  the female DVI plugs to determine what signals they are compatible  with. Be sure to look for a label, or check the product documentation to make sure you know what type it is. If you have plugs that are DVI-D, they will accept a DVI-D  cable. If you have plugs that are DVI-A, they will accept a DVI-A cable. If you have plugs that are DVI-I, they will accept any type of DVI cable.

DVI Extension Cables
It is possible to extend existing DVI cables by the use of DVI-I extension and DVI-D Extension cables. The maximum signal length, however, is 5 meters, and going beyond that may result in quality loss.

HDMI Cables - Fundamentals - Tutorial

Who supports HDMI?
The HDMI Founders include leading consumer electronics manufacturers Hitachi, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic), Philips, Sony, Thomson (RCA), Toshiba, and Silicon Image. Digital Content Protection, LLC (a subsidiary of Intel) is providing High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) for HDMI. In addition, HDMI has the support of major motion picture producers Fox and Universal, and system operators DirecTV, EchoStar (Dish Network) as well as CableLabs.

How do consumers benefit from HDMI?
The new HDMI digital interconnect provides:

  • Superior, uncompressed digital video and audio quality
  • Simple, user-friendly connector that replaces the maze of cabling behind the entertainment center
  • Integrated remote control
  • A popular interface enabling the transmission of high-definition content. HDMI opens the floodgate of digital content from major motion picture producers

What is the life expectancy of HDMI?
HDTV uses less than 1/2 of HDMI's available 5 Gbps bandwidth. With capacity to spare, HDMI can incorporate new technology advancements and capabilities long into the foreseeable future.

What are the advantages of HDMI over existing analog interfaces such as composite, S-Video and component video?

  • Quality HDMI transfers uncompressed digital audio and video for the highest, crispest image quality.
  • All Digital HDMI ensures an all-digital rendering of video without the losses associated with analog interfaces and their unnecessary digital-to-analog conversions.
  • Low-cost HDMI provides the quality and functionality of a digital interface while also supporting uncompressed video formats in a simple, cost-effective manner.
  • Audio HDMI supports multiple audio formats, from standard stereo to multi-channel surround-sound.
  • Ease-of-use HDMI combines video and multi-channel audio into a single cable, eliminating the cost, complexity, and confusion of multiple cables currently used in A/V systems.
  • Intelligence HDMI supports communication between the video source (such as a DVD player) and the DTV, enabling new functionality.
